Historical Context
The story of Faust first appeared in the year 1587 as a print material in the form of a chapbook (a cheap pamphlet) called the Historia & Tale of Doctor Johannes Faustus. Earlier this tale existed as a story but the first printed material was the chapbook as retold by Marlowe and later by Goethe (with some variations). The chapbook was then translated into English in 1592 by p. Gent as The History of the Damnable Life and also Deserved Death of Doctor John Faustus (Faust).
The Creator Christopher Marlowe
Christopher Marlowe is the author of The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. Marlowe was born on February 6, 1564 in Canterbury, England. He entered school at King’s school, which enjoyed a reputation as a center of theatrical interests in the beginning year of 1579 and was later elected the queen’s scholar. He was especially interested in reading medieval romances. After college, Marlowe was involved in writing poetry and drama that appealed to a wider audience and was instrumental in influencing other artists. Some of his other famous plays include Hero and Leander, Edward II and Tamburine 1 and 2. His Doctor Faustus is dated 1588-9; although the first recorded performance was in 1594. He died in 1593 (Southwest college).
The origin of this tale dates back into the 16th century, and it seems it was aimed to be a morality tale in Germany. A famous Doctor by then who existed called Doctor Johannes Faust and was famous for magician. Dr. Faust was a humanist who affirmed that it is not obligatory to worship God since he was himself like God. The story then gave birth to the legend which Lucifer made a bargain of selling his soul for knowledge. The story was aimed at advising people and especially men not to choose evil for any prize. (The myth of Faust). It is further reported that the story resonated well with audiences as early as 1588.
Marlowe’s story and the movie in general warn the general audience that we should not be materialistic. We should never honor earthly things over our dignity and self respect, but we should be principled with firm decisions.
