1. Nocturne in E Flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2, Chopin

I highly disliked the Nocturne in E Flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2, by Chopin because the nocturne is entangled with a melancholic and reflective mood from the start until to the end when it turns into a passionate mood. The musical nocturne is characterized by freedom in rhythm as illustrated by “senza tempo” and a legato melody with varied leaps. The 12/8 meter as well as the 12 beats each subdivided into 3s gives the music a waltz like rhythm making it hard for one to sing along with the rhythm. Therefore, the melancholic mood of the nocturne as well as the waltz like leaping melody does not appeal to my musical ear.

2. SymphonieFantastique (Fantastic Symphony), Fourth Movement: March to the Scaffold, Berlioz

I very much enjoyed the Symphonie Fantastique Fourth Movement: March to the Scaffold by Hector Berlioz. The orchestral instrumentation of the symphony is comprised of wind, string and percussions instruments 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 4 bassoons, 2 clarinets, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, 2 cornets, 2 ophicleides, 2 harps and 2 pairs of snare drum, bass drums, timpani, cymbals and bells. The variety of instruments all arranged into a harmonious symphony is worth listening to. The symphony movement resembles a march as it is filled with rushing passages and loud playing horns. The sequence of pizzicato notes creates an illusion of cheering thus making the symphony one of the most interesting pieces of music to analyze and listen to.

3. Piano Sonata No. 14 in C%u266F minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven a romantic period composer.

The Sonata was composed in 1801 and contains three movements. I am very fascinated by the third movement “Presto agitato. The “Presto agitato” is in sonata form and composed in C%u266F minor. The movement is characterized by fast moving arpeggios as well as accented notes. As a result, it is quite a challenging piece to play as it needs high technical skills. Moreover, Beethoven made use of sforzando notes and effectively positioned fortissimo passages which give the movement a unique vigorous sound. With an energetic Sonata allegro, the movement is diversified with highly specialized musical and instrumental technicality.
